Daniel Heitzman

March 11, 1930 ~ September 18, 2015 (age 85) 85 Years Old

Daniel H. Heitzman

CLOVERDALE - Daniel "Dan" Harold Heitzman, 85, of Cloverdale, left this world peacefully, Thursday, September 18, 2015, at The Meadows of Kalida. He was born March 11, 1930, in Perry Township, near  Cloverdale. He was the youngest child of the late Harle and Ottie Heitzman. On March 14, 1953, he married his high school sweetheart, Joan Brooks, who passed away June 14, 2014. They were fortunate to have shared 61 years together.

Dan is survived by his children: Dan J. (Jean) Heitzman of Continental, Doug Heitzman of Cloverdale, and Deb (Jeff) Martin of Ottawa; 5 grandchildren: Jennifer (Mike) Gasser of Ft. Jennings, Derek (Joy) Heitzman of Continental, Keri (Dave) Shaffer of Defiance, Ashley Verhoff of Continental, and Marc Heitzman of Hamler; 8 great-grandchildren: Bryce, Wyatt, and Loryn Gasser, Dane and Louisa Heitzman, Mason and Jay Shaffer, and Brody Verhoff; a sister: Alta (Dave) Lohman of Delta; a sister-in-law: Dorothy Heitzman of Grand Rapids; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his sister: Ruth Heitzman; a brother: George Heitzman; and 2 great-grandchildren: Nathan and Mallory Gasser.

Dan graduated from Continental High School. He retired from Philips ECG, where he was an inspector in Bonded Shield for many years. He had previously worked at General Motors, Defiance, and was a car salesman for a short period of time, after high school. His passion, like his father's, was farming. Dan started farming as a young boy and continued to help his son, Dan J. and his grandson, Derek, until he fell upon ill health a few years ago. He liked to go fishing and especially loved to talk to people, as no one was a stranger to him. Dan was also a former member of the local IBEW and the Putnam County Farm Bureau. He enjoyed being outside and mowing the grass.

He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather that truly enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was happy-go-lucky, with a very generous spirit. He will be greatly missed by everyone that knew him.

A Funeral Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 26, 2015 at HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME, Continental with Rev. Terry Porter officiating. Burial will follow in Cascade Cemetery, Cloverdale. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home on Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Continental Community Library, Putnam County Council On Aging, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
