Oakwood – Garlden M. Grindstaff, 89, of Oakwood died 12:06 p.m. Monday, May 1, 2017 at Lutheran Hospital, Ft. Wayne, Indiana. He was born May 3, 1927 In Dante, Virginia to the late John F. Grindstaff and Bertha (Johnson) Pennington. On November 11, 1950, he married Dolores M. Leatherman who died December 8, 2004.
Garlden is survived by his three children, Phyllis (Jay) Stephenson of Scott, David C. Grindstaff of Oakwood, Duane L. (Laura) Grindstaff of Oakwood; eight grandchildren, Scott (Tara) Taylor, Mandy (Jared) Collins, Jolene (Eric) Kable, Sara (T.R. Dearing) Stephenson, Jill Stephenson, Laura (Alan) Casillo, Thomas McMichael, and Shelby (Tyler Carlisle) McMichael; twelve great-grandchildren, Courtney and Hailey Taylor, Blake Miller and Alexis Taylor, Dylan Casillo, Deanna, Kinsey, and Deakin Dearing, Bracin Bauer, Cole and Izabella Carlisle, Sopha McMichael; and a brother, Fred Grindstaff of Paulding. He is preceded in death by a brother, Arthur Grindstaff and a sister, Avalon Back.
He was a laborer for Braun Ambulances, formerly of Oakwood. Garlden was a Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Grover Hill VFW, Oakwood American Legion, and Black Swamp CB Club. His favorite pastime was fishing.
A Funeral Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 6, 2017 at HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME, Oakwood with Rev. Terry Porter officiating. Burial will follow in Mellinger Cemetery, Grover Hill with military rites by the Oakwood American Legion Post #341. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.
