Helen Marie Maddock

OAKWOOD - Helen Marie Maddock, 93, of Oakwood passed away on Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at her home in Oakwood.  She was born April 6, 1926 in Oakwood as the middle daughter of the late Alvin and Doris (Ritchie) Maddock, and the granddaughter of the former Oakwood Mayor, Ohio State Ritchie.

She is survived by her nieces and nephews:  Kathy Williams of Moneta, VA, Jean (Daniel) Bulau of Paulding, Patricia (Mark Asman) Essex of Pittsboro, NC, Michael (Wendy) McCullough of Hudson, MI, Joseph (Alana) Essex of Defiance, Donald (Brian Linthicum) McCullough of Ft. Myers, FL, Margret Price of Delphos, James McCullough of Elephant Butte, NM and Thomas (Valerie Kadane) Essex of Manassas, VA; niece-in-law, Sandra Essex; special friends: Joyce Cochran, Ruth Lemelin, Michelle Yelmene; 27 great-nephews and nieces; many great-great and great-great-great nephews and nieces.

Helen was also preceded in death by her sisters: Barbra McCullough and Iris Essex; her nephew: Alan Essex; her niece: Janet Babcock; nephew-in-law: James Price and companion: Dortha Marquis.

Helen attended Oakwood School for eleven years and then graduated from Morgan Park High School, Chicago, IL.  In 1949 she received a Bachelor of Science degree in the Animal Science, and in 1952 she earned a Masters of Science degree in Animal Nutrition both from Iowa State University.  She retired from American Cyanamid Company after 33 years, starting at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York City and later moving with the firm to a new campus in Princeton, New Jersey.  Her positions varied over the years from technical writer, advertising manager and program manager.  Her special interest was pigs, as indicated by the many, many pigs given to her as gifts over her adulthood. After  Helen moved back to Oakwood in 2009, she became very active with Oakwood Arbor of Gleaners, Paulding County Master Gardeners, Twin Oaks United Methodist Church, Friends of the Paulding Park District, Black Swamp Conservancy, and the John Paulding Historical Society.

Helen loved the outdoors and spent much quality time in many of the National Parks.  She was rarely as happy indoors as she was outside or in a barn.  She believed strongly in education and has supported scholarships at a number of colleges affiliated with the family.

A Celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 9, 2019 at Twin Oaks United Methodist Church, Oakwood with Pastor Rick Snyder officiating.  Burial will be at a later date in Prairie Chapel Cemetery.  Visitation will be Saturday from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. at HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME, Oakwood and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service at the church.
