Mary Ann Hanneman
GLANDORF - Mary Ann Hanneman, 89, of Glandorf died at The Meadows of Ottawa Monday, March 19, 2018. She was born to the late Lawrence and Veronica (Goedde) Gerten on April 19, 1928. She grew up on the farm and learned to work hard at an early age by milking cows and baling hay. She lost her beloved father on her 21st birthday. One year later she married Francis "Shorty" Hanneman on June 27, 1950. They farmed together for over 50 years until his death in 2006.
Mary Ann was very talented from playing piano and accordion "by ear", to creating centerpieces, using flowers she "made from scratch", crocheting and quilting. In her 50's, she painted 5 beautiful ceramic nativity sets for her children. In her later years she shared family lunches on Tuesdays, played euchre, pinochle, and bingo.
Her pride and joy were the Gerten and Hanneman family tree books she started and faithfully kept up until her illness in 2014. A tumor stole her ability to walk and she moved to The Meadows of Ottawa where she used her crocheting skills to make many baby bonnets for great-grandchildren and others. She always enjoyed the Tuesday lunches which continued at The Meadows until her death.
Mary Ann leaves behind her five children, Jerry (Mary) Hanneman of Glandorf, Larry (Linda) Hanneman of Norwalk, Mary Ellen (Dan) Klear of Glandorf, Dan (Pat) Hanneman of Glandorf, and Doris (Jay) Schroeder of Ottawa; eighteen grandchildren; and twenty-one great-grandchildren, who will miss her greatly. Her sister, Dorothy Duling and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Thelma Gerten, Teresia Gerten, Mary (Neil) Balbaugh, Walter (Toni) Hoehn, Eleanor Schnipke, and Bob (Jane) Hanneman remain to remember her. Those who went before her were brothers, John (Rita) Gerten, Harold (Alice) Gerten, Ed Gerten, Lawrence Gerten, Jr., Henry Gerten (infant); sisters, Odelia (Ray) Siefker and Lucille (Elmer) Karhoff; and brother-in-law, Vic Duling. Mary Ann had great faith in God and a strong devotion to Mary. She will be missed.
Mary Ann was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Glandorf, its Rosary Altar Society and Catholic Ladies of Columbia.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 23, 2018 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Glandorf with Fr. Tony Fortman officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at LOVE FUNERAL HOME, Ottawa where there will be a Scripture Service at 1:45 p.m. and a Parish Rosary at 7:45 p.m.
Memorials may be made to Putnam County Habitat for Humanity or to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Her family would like to thank all those at The Meadows of Ottawa who made her smile and kept her comfortable, especially Nancy, Kathy and Kayla. To those who stopped in to see her, your visits meant more to her than you will ever know.
