Richard "Dick" R. Shalter
Continental - Richard "Dick" R. Shalter, 89, of Continental died 2:32 p.m. Wednesday, August 1, 2018 at St. Rita's Medical Center, Lima. He was born August 12, 1928 in Continental to the late Howard L. and Alta (Barringer) Shalter. On February 16, 1952 he married Dorothy Ann Best who passed away January 16, 2014.
Dick is survived by his children: Rex (Barbara) Shalter and John Shalter all of Ottawa; Bruce Shalter of Columbus; Ted (Judy) Shalter of Glandorf; Jayne (Ronald) Romes of Monclova; Carol Brandau of Radford, VA; a daughter-in-law: Lori Shalter of Houston, TX; two sisters-in-law: Mary Margaret "Putz" Schroeder of Glandorf and Jean Best of Delphos; twelve grandchildren: Erica (Tom) Verhoff, Elyse Brandau, Ian Brandau, Andy (Katie) Romes, Hanna Romes, Lizette Shalter, Hans (Toni) Shalter, Madalyn Shalter, Austin Shalter, Lydia Shalter, Grant (Amanda) Shalter and Breeann (TJ) Bogart; eleven great-grandchildren: Elizabeth, Taylor and Evan Verhoff; Evelyn Romes and Harrison Romes; Easton, Harlow and Finn Shalter; Addison Shalter, Gabriella and Braxton Bogart. He is also preceded in death by a son: Dean Shalter; a brother, Willis Shalter; two sisters: Maxine Buckley and Marvel Houseworth; and a sister-in-law: Velma Shalter.
Dick retired from working at Henry Implement Co, Continental; a lifelong farmer; a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Continental and a former member of the Parish Council; member of Continental American Legion, Ottawa VFW and social member of Ottawa Eagle. He was a former Scout master for Troop 200 for 13 years. He also was an Army WWII veteran with the Pacific Theater .
Special thanks go to Vaughnda Prowant and family for their loving care for our father. Dick loved life, his family and his friends. He never knew a stranger. He will forever be remembered as the greatest storyteller by everyone who knew him.
A Mass of Christian burial will begin 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 8, 2018 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Continental, with Fr. Mark Hoying officiating. Burial will follow in Monroe Cemetery, Continental with military graveside service by Continental American Legion. Visitation will be Tuesday, 2 to 8 p.m. at HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME, Continental and 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church.
Memorials may be given to St. John's Building fund or St. Jude's Children's Research.
