Donald Schlagbaum

   OTTOVILLE - Donald Schlagbaum, 79, of Ottoville died 6:35 p.m. Sunday, November 21, 2021 at Van Wert Health, Van Wert.  He was born September 20, 1942 in Ottoville to the late Tony and Gertrude (Bendele) Schlagbaum.  On November 16, 1963, he married his high school sweetheart, Dee Dee Maag, who survives in Ottoville.

   Donald is also survived by 3 sons:  Steven (Pam) Schlagbaum of Crescent Springs, KY, Dave (Shannon) Schlagbaum of Ottoville and Mike (Beth) Schlagbaum of Van Wert; 9 grandchildren:  Brennan (Erin) Schlagbaum, Brayden Schlagbaum, Bryce Schlagbaum, Briggs Schlagbaum, Quinley Schlagbaum, Trae Schlagbaum, Kellen Schlagbaum, Elyse Klinger and Grant Schlagbaum; a great-granddaughter:  Logan Lee Schlagbaum; a sister:  Arlene (James) Herman of Colorado; 3 brothers:  Gary (Janice) Schlagbaum of Ottoville, Russell Schlagbaum of Ottoville and Tim (Cherie) Schlagbaum of Tampa, FL; and a sister-in-law:  Marian Schlagbaum of Colorado.

   In addition to his parents, Donald is preceded in death by an infant sister, Kathleen Schlagbaum and a brother, Roger Schlagbaum.

   Donald had been a self-employed milk hauler for Defiance Milk Products, Defiance.  He also had worked for DOT Lines, Inc, Lima.  In his retirement years, he worked for the Ottoville Hardware.

   Donald was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville.  He was a 1960 graduate of Ottoville High School and was active in the Ottoville community.  He served on the Park Board, the Village Council and was a charter member of the Lion's Club.

   Donald was a loyal fan of the Cleveland Indians, Browns and the Cavaliers; but may have been best known as a Big Green fan.  He has cheered on many generations of Ottoville kids in their many sports, following them throughout the season and along the tournament trail. 

   Donald's life will be celebrated with a memorial mass at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 11, 2021 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Ottoville with Father Jerome Schetter officiating.  The family will hold a private graveside service in the church cemetery at a later date.  The arrangements are under the direction of LOVE-HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME, Jackson Township.
