Obituary

Doris Ruth German

OTTAWA - Doris Ruth German, 91, of Ottawa, died at 1:14 p.m., Wednesday, May 26, 2021 at her residence. She was born May 10, 1930 on a farm northwest of Ottoville, Ohio to the late Edward A. and Matilda E. (Weber) Eickholt. She came from very humble beginnings-no electricity or plumbing, and her dad farmed with horses.  They had strong Catholic values, the 10 commandments, golden rule, Sunday mass, and family gatherings were a big part of life.  Every child had chores and Ed’s philosophy was, "you don’t work, you don’t eat."  Doris was a firm believer in the power of prayer.

Doris graduated from Ottoville High School Class of 1948.  She considered herself fortunate to be taught in grade school by the dedicated Precious Blood Nuns who were only interested in spiritual and academic development.

On September 5, 1953, Doris married Karl H. German of Ottawa at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Ottoville by Monsignor Frommherz.  They met at Hoyts Tavern Ottawa on Holy Saturday and danced their way through 56 ½ years of marriage to the big band era, polka, square dancing while working and rearing 5 kids they loved.  Karl passed away on May 15, 2010.

Survivors include four children: Karla (Randy) Shock of Lima, Nancy (Roger) Vennekotter of Ottawa, Lynda (Leonard JR.) Schnipke of Ottoville, Diane (Daryl) Croy of Ottawa; nine grandchildren: A’ndrea (Andrew) Monday, Erik (Michelle) Shock, Dr. Abby Vennekotter, Ross Vennekotter, Ashley (John) Linser, Dusty (Leanna) Schnipke, Curt (Kayla) Croy, Mitchell (Brittany) Croy, Nolan (Alivia) Croy; seventeen great-grandchildren with one more on the way; and one sister, Lillian (Harold) Kohlrieser of Florida.

Doris was also preceded in death by her son, Ted German; one brother, C/M Sgt. Kenneth (Rose) Eickholt; and four sisters:  Evelyn (Raymond) Brinkman, Norma (Bernard) Smith, Lucille (George) Mangas, Jeanette (James) Ruhe.

Doris was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, the Altar Rosary Society, Minister of Praise, Past Grand Regent of Catholic Daughters of America, received the Daughters of Isabella Award from Ottawa K of C 1757 & Miraculous Medal Association. She was devoted to the Blessed Mother & the Rosary. She was also a member of the American Legion Aux. Post 63 Ottawa, Life Member of VFW Post 9142 Ottawa, served as four term Aux. President, Ohio Polka Boosters, Red Hat Society and Ottawa Senior Center where she played Euchre and pinochle.  Doris received the Co-Outstanding Senior Citizen Award in 2015.  She was a blood donor from 1952 to 2005, a member of Philips Quarter Century Club, volunteered at St. Rita’s Medical Center since 1990 and the Meadows of Ottawa until 2020.

Karl & Doris with 2 other couples were instrumental in getting shuffleboard courts at Waterworks Park June 1996 and started the SPPS “300 club” in 1979 with nine other couples.

Doris retired from Philips ECG Ottawa in June 1990 with 30+ years of service.  She enjoyed retirement, coffee with her classmates at McDonalds on Tuesday mornings, cruises with her husband, cards and summer polka fest with friends in their motor homes.  Enjoyed walking around town while praying a rosary.

Funeral Mass will begin at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, June 5, 2021 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Ottawa with Father Scott Kramer officiating. A private burial will be held at a later date. Visitation will be Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until the time of service at the church.
