Elizabeth A. “Betty” Birkemeyer

GLANDORF – Elizabeth A. “Betty” Birkemeyer, 83, of Glandorf, wife, mother and grandmother passed away peacefully on May 1, 2022 at the Meadows of Leipsic, following her recent diagnosis of cancer.  Betty, a devout Catholic, believed in the power of prayer and love of family and attended Mass daily.

She was born on July 22, 1938, in Leipsic, to the late Wilbur N. “Boots” and Juanita H. (Kihm) Kuhlman. On September 6, 1958, she married Norman R. Birkemeyer (deceased) and together they had five children:  Douglas Birkemeyer (deceased), Greg (Peg) Birkemeyer of Beavercreek Twp, Cathy (Dean) Niese of Maumee, Gary Birkemeyer of Glandorf and Beth (Tim) Heuerman of New Cleveland.  Betty had 9 grandchildren: Kristin (Thuron Ham) Birkemeyer, Jon (Brandi) Birkemeyer, Nathan (Jaye Marie Stapleton) Niese, Alyssa (Jay) Niese, Justin (Stacie) Niese, Erica (Sean) Fischnich, Ross (Katie) Heuerman, Kyle (Madalyn Lehman) Heuerman and Cory (Ellie Wenzinger) Heuerman. Also surviving are her 14 great-grandchildren:  Braylon, Taylor, Canaan, Zaharra, Kylie, Mason, Rowen, Kolten, Peyton, Rylan, Addison, Brooklyn, Kinsley and Corbyn. Betty is also survived by her five siblings: James Kuhlman, Paul Kuhlman, both of Ottawa, Joan (Phil) Oswald of Greenville, PA, Helen (Tom) Hodson of Wilmington and Mary Jane (Rick) Fellers of Columbus; as well as a brother-in-law, Thomas Birkemeyer of Columbus Grove.

In addition to Norman, Douglas and her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her in-laws: Harry and Nina Birkemeyer; two sisters-in-law: Marcia Kuhlman and Alice White; and two brothers-in-law: Vincent Birkemeyer and Richard Birkemeyer.

Growing up Betty worked at her father’s grocery store, the Hub Market.  Following graduation from Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School as class valedictorian, she immediately went to work at Marathon as an accounting assistant. Betty paused her career to raise her children and to volunteer at the Glandorf Elementary Grade School as a Religion Instructor and as an Office Assistant in the Parish Rectory. Betty went on to become the Advertising Manager for the Putnam County Sentinel and completed her career working in the Putnam County Probate Court office, where she retired in 2003.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the Putnam County Homecare and Hospice nurses/aides and to the Meadows of Leipsic nurses/aides for their caring and nurturing.
