Erma Scheckelhoff Obituary

Erma Jean (Meyer) Scheckelhoff

OTTAWA - Erma Scheckelhoff passed away with her family at her side on Wednesday, March 3, 2021, at the Meadows of Ottawa. She was born on January 19, 1932, to the late Alphonse and Ludmilla (Heitmeyer) Meyer of Pandora, Ohio. She attended and graduated from Pandora High School. After graduation she met Roy Scheckelhoff and on October 27, 1951, they were married; she would be the light of his life for 69 years. Erma and Roy both worked at Philips Display Components in Ottawa. Erma retired from her position in the Accounting Department after 28 years of service which qualified her to be a member of the Philips Quarter Century Club. She was a member of the Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church as well as its Altar Rosary Society and the Catholic Ladies of Columbia.

Erma loved spending time at the family cottage on the Maumee River boating, visiting with friends and family, and sitting around the fire circle. She enjoyed playing cards, especially River Rummy and Euchre, and she was pretty good at both. She and Roy both liked to dance, and they were active in the Ottawa Dance Club back in the day. They also traveled to polka festivals in the area and always danced at weddings. She spent time on her computer keeping current with friends on Facebook and responding to email. She always had a beautiful flower garden with hanging baskets. She grew up on the family farm and every year she was excited for the crops to appear in the spring, see the green fields when driving through the countryside, and to hear about the harvest in the fall.

Erma was a caring wife, mother, and grandmother and she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren: sons: Kevin (Terrie) Scheckelhoff of Columbus, Ohio and Douglas (Cheri) Scheckelhoff of Laurel, Maryland; and grandchildren: Hannah (Alexander) Javelly, Douglas John (Kristen) Scheckelhoff, Hale Scheckelhoff (fiancée Taylor), Trevor Scheckelhoff, Tessa Scheckelhoff, and Danica Hope Scheckelhoff.

Although Erma did not attend college herself, she and Roy worked hard to give both of their sons that opportunity. That support resulted in both sons obtaining undergraduate and graduate degrees from The Ohio State University. As part of that experience, Erma became a passionate Buckeye fan. No football Saturday was complete without the post-game family phone call to analyze the final outcome.

Erma is survived by her youngest sister, Evelyn (Richard) Miley of Columbus, Ohio. She is preceded in death by her two brothers, Denis Meyer and Alphonse Meyer, Jr., both of Pandora and her sister, Eileen Bockrath of Glandorf; sisters-in-law Betty Meyer and Evelyn Meyer, and brothers-in-law Linus Bockrath and Richard Miley.

Erma came into this world, lived her entire life, and died in Putnam County, Ohio, and would not have had it any other way. She led a complete and wonderful life and passed away with nothing additional that needed to be said, no work that needed to be done, and no place that needed to be visited. She lived a life done well. She will be greatly missed by all that knew her.

A private funeral service is planned; burial will be at the Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of LOVE FUNERAL HOME, Ottawa. The funeral service will be streamed on Saturday, March 6, 2021 through the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church Facebook page.

Memorial donations may be made to Putnam County Homecare and Hospice or the Sts. Peter and Paul Capital Campaign.
