Frances Ilene (Roddy) Spangler
OTTAWA – Frances Ilene (Roddy) Spangler, 94, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, passed away peacefully into eternity at 12:20 p.m. on Tuesday, September 5, 2023 at Putnam Heritage, Ottawa surrounded by her loving family. Frances was born on May 24, 1929, in Wauseon to the late George and Mercedes (Trondle) Roddy.
She grew up in Wauseon and went to live with Frank and Luella Barrett at the age of 17, where she became part of the Barrett family. At the Barrett’s, she grew up with four sisters: Patricia (Larry) Krauss, Betty (Marion) Klein, Joanne (James) Miller and Marilyn (Lowell) Dickerson. All preceded her in death, except for her brother-in-law, Larry Krauss.
Frances is also preceded in death by in-laws: Mathias (Eva) Spangler, Paul (Lucy) Spangler, Mary Margaret (Albert) Barlage, Anna Rose (Len) Kahle, Jerry Spangler, Leo (Gladys) Spangler, and Kenneth (Esther Meyer) Spangler. Her sister-in-law, Esther Meyer, still survives.
Frances met her husband, Richard “Rich” Spangler after World War II. Rich proudly served and fought for his country. Fran and her sisters would travel to Hoyt’s Tavern in Ottawa on many occasions and that’s where Fran met Rich. They danced and had fun with many friends. Rich would court Fran for a year traveling from Leipsic to Napoleon. On September 27, 1952, they were married and celebrated 59 years until Rich passed away on November 30, 2011.
Together Rich and Fran had five children: Suzanne (Doug) Graham, Karen (Cody) Miller, both of Lima, Richard Spangler of Ottawa, Kimberly (Carl) Tocyznski of Toledo and Betsy (Tim) Hansen of Glandorf; nine grandchildren, one deceased grandchild; 18 great-grandchildren with one more on the way and two deceased great-grandchildren.
Fran was an excellent cook and seamstress. She showed her love for family with many afghans and treasures that she and Rich made throughout the years. She was a self-taught cake decorator, providing birthday cakes for all the grandchildren and special occasions. She would make a traditional Christmas cake for baby Jesus, where we all sang happy birthday to Jesus. Fran’s pie crust was unbeatable and she always provided fantastic meals for her family. She was a hard worker and enjoyed helping the elderly at the care center in Ottawa until the age of 76. Fran became a Catholic when she went to live with the Barretts, and raised her family to love God. She was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and its Altar Rosary Society.
Funeral Mass will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 9, 2023 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Ottawa with Fr. Scott Kramer officiating. Burial will follow at St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Glandorf. Visitation will be held from 3 – 7 p.m. on Friday at LOVE FUNERAL HOME, Ottawa.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial donation in Fran’s memory to Sts. Peter and Paul Endowment Fund.
