James Hattery Obituary

James Olen Hattery

OTTAWA - James Olen Hattery, 76, passed away in Ottawa, Ohio, on May 5, 2023. He was born to Fred O. and Ethel (Combs) Hattery (both deceased) on September 17, 1946. On December 27, 1969, he married the love of his life Leona Moore. She survives in Ottawa.

He served his country in the United States Navy aboard the Destroyer USS Meredith as an Operations Specialist, 2nd Class from 1969-1972. He graduated from Alger High School and The University of Northwestern of Ohio with a degree in Business Administration and Production Management.  He worked as a Section Head for Philips ECG for many years.  He was then Vice President/General Manager for Delafoil Ohio, Inc. in Perrysburg where he retired.  He then went to work in operations at Ohio Logistics until he retired for good.

He was a former part owner of the Grove Party Shop and part owner of Pike Run Golf Club for the past 40 years with his partners Bob Buckland, Charlie Miller, Steve Radcliff, and Ken Pester, who have become his brothers.  He was also part owner of Legends Grill, Sports, and Spirits since its inception in 2002 with his son-in-law Brian Kuhlman.  He would like to extend a special thank you to his partners for all of the great years and memories they have had together.

He was a member of the Ottawa American Legion, the Ottawa Fraternal Order of Eagles, and Pike Run Golf Club.  He spent four years on the Ottawa Tree Commission.  He was an avid follower of The Ohio State Buckeyes and all Cleveland professional sports teams and enjoyed playing and watching golf. He especially loved watching his grandchildren participate in all of their activities.  He was so proud to say he did not miss a dance recital in over 40 years.

In addition to his wife of 53 years, he is survived by four beautiful daughters and three sons-in-law who were more like his own sons: Jill (Brian) Kuhlman of Ottawa, Heather Hattery of Powell, Megan (Jeff) Schulte of Ottawa, and Lindsay (Preston) Stoller of Powell; eight precious grandchildren who were the light of his life: Wil, Ben, and Maecyn Kuhlman, Landyn and Ayvrie Schulte, and Kate, Jack, and Crew Stoller; brother, Fred D. Hattery of Columbus; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law;  and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased in death by a beloved sister: Judi Rose; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

The family would like to extend a gracious thank you to Mercy Health Hospice and Putnam Heritage for their compassion and care, Pastor Marcella, and all of his family, friends, and golf buddies who stopped in to visit.

Funeral service will begin 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 10, 2023 at Trinity United Methodist Church, Ottawa with Rev. Laurie Beaty officiating.  Burial will follow in Harman Cemetery, Gilboa with military rites by the Ottawa American Legion, VFW, Amvets and DAV.  Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at LOVE FUNERAL HOME, Ottawa with a prayer service to begin at 2:00 p.m.  Additional visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral Wednesday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Central Ohio Chapter of the National Hemophilia Foundation or a charity of the donor’s choice.
