John D. Arms

   OAKWOOD – John D. Arms, 88, of Oakwood died 11:03 p.m. Saturday, July 16, 2022, at his residence.  He was born November 4, 1933, in Buchanan County, Virginia to the late John T. and Bonnie (Lester) Arms.  On June 21, 1963, he married Linda Scott, who survives.

   He is also survived by 2 children:  Melinda (Jeff) Spangler and John Bradley Arms, both of Oakwood; 2 grandchildren:  Tara (Matt) Adams of Cloverdale and Tiffany Spangler of Oakwood; 4 great-grandchildren:  Kyra, Karisa and Everett Adams and Emerson Gamble; a sister: Ruby Jenkins of Mount Vernon and a sister-in-law:  Linda Arms of Oakwood.

   John is preceded in death by an infant sister, Cathleen Arms and a brother, Hulet “Bill” Arms.

   John was a member of Roselms Christian Church and was an US Air Force veteran.  Following his military service, John returned to Mount Vernon where he worked for the Mount Vernon Bridgeworks and the Cooper-Bessemer Foundry.  He then moved to Defiance and began his 28 years at General Motors Power Train, retiring in 1999.  John was a member of the UAW Local #211, Defiance and a life member of the VFW #4027, Mount Vernon.

   John enjoyed NASCAR and was a Dale Earnhardt fan.  He like Bluegrass music and enjoyed attending Bluegrass festivals.  John loved going home to Virginia and going to the Smoky Mountains. 

   The funeral service for John will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 22, 2022, at the HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME, Oakwood with Pastor Michael Roose officiating.  Burial will follow in Sherman Cemetery, Oakwood with military rites by the Paulding VFW.  Visitation will be Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m.  and Friday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
