Leona Korte Obituary

Leona Grace (Schroeder) Korte

LEIPSIC – Leona Grace (Schroeder) Korte, 95 of Leipsic, was peacefully called home to the Lord at 1:53 p.m., Friday, January 26, 2024 while resting at Bridge Hospice, Findlay.

She was born January 20, 1929 in Leipsic to the late Vincent and Anna (Winkler) Schroeder. Leona attended Leipsic High School.  On October 26, 1949, she began her life with her husband Charles D. Korte.  He preceded her in death on January 7, 2013.  She retired from Allied Egri.  She enjoyed helping others with natural remedies and sold Nature’s Sunshine herbal supplements for many years.  She was a member of the Altar Rosary Society and life-long member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Leipsic.  A devout catholic, she found comfort in reciting the rosary daily.

Left to mourn Leona’s passing are four children: Kenneth (Beth) Korte of Leipsic, Peggy Wilhelm of Wauseon, Jeanne Korte of Leipsic and Jerry Korte of Findlay; ten grandchildren: Julie Korte, Dawn (Mike) Oedy, Lindsey (Scott Gregory) Korte, Garrett ( Katie) Korte, Christopher (Sarah) Wilhelm, Katie (John) Nault, Jaclyn (Nathan) Bozman, Kimberly (James) Pierce, Chelsea (Kyle) Schuchler, and Alison (Fadi) Shebaro; thirteen great grandchildren; three brothers: Norman Schroeder, Othmer (Rita) Schroeder, and Leon “George” Schroeder, all of Leipsic; and a sister-in-law, Frances “Frannie” Schroeder of Findlay.

In addition to reuniting with her loving husband, Charles, Leona joins in heaven those who have passed before her, parents: Vincent and Anna (Winkler) Schroeder; two brothers: Cleo (Kathleen) Schroeder, Harold “Pete” Schroeder; a sister: Rita (Cliff) Oedy; and two sisters-in-law: Marilyn Schroeder and Karen Schroeder; and a son-in-law: George Wilhelm.

Leona was a remarkable seamstress, having made trick-or-treat costumes for grandchildren and numerous bridesmaid dresses throughout the years.  A skilled crocheter, she created treasured blankets for every grandchild and great-grandchild.  An artist at heart, Leona loved doing numerous crafts.  She also played the accordion in an all-girls band in the 40’s that traveled from town to town on a flatbed truck and sold records after their performances.

Leona was a loyal Cleveland Guardians fan.  With her husband, she enjoyed years of following sprint car racing.  Leona was a skilled bingo player, mesmerizing her grandkids with the number of cards she could play at once.  She loved to travel, especially the trips she would take to Vegas with her sister, Rita.  In more recent years, she enjoyed riding the Schnipke bus on her way to the casinos with her family.

Her family will keep Leona’s memory alive by telling stories of her quick wit and humor, but also continuing to serve her prized recipes at all family gatherings, in particular, her beef and noodles and “Grandma steak”.  She will be remembered with love.

Funeral mass will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 31, 2024 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Leipsic with Fr. Randy Giesige officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday and again on Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at LOVE-HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME, Leipsic.

Memorial donations maybe be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or St. Mary’s Catholic School.
